Apple reportedly lays off 100 employees from its Services division due to a change in its priorities. This is the company’s fourth layoff this year.
Apple informed the affected employees about its decision on Tuesday, August 27. The biggest job cuts happened in the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore team.
Apple Books team affected the most by layoffs
All major tech giants, including Google, Intel, and Amazon, laid off thousands of employees in 2024. They cited the slowdown in the US economy and an overhiring spree during the pandemic as key reasons.
This is Apple’s fourth job cut of the year. Yet, unlike its competitors, it has not laid off thousands of employees, citing a weak economy.
The Bloomberg report claims the layoffs will most affect the Apple Books app and Apple Bookstore team, with the former no longer being Apple’s priority. Unlike its other Services, Apple Books is not a major revenue driver for the company.
Apple also removed some employees from the Apple News and other Services divisions, including some from engineering roles. Despite this, Apple News remains a key area of focus within the company.
All affected employees have the option to find another role inside Apple within 60 days before their termination.
Apple’s fourth known layoffs of 2024
In recent years, Apple’s Services division fueled its revenue growth. So, it is surprising to see the company lay off employees from this division.
Apple reportedly laid off over 600 employees in April this year after shuttering its Apple Car and micro LED projects. All affected employees worked on the two secret projects within the organization. Before this, at the beginning of the year, the company’s reorganization efforts within the Siri team led to layoffs. This affected 121 employees, though Apple gave them the option to relocate to Texas and work on other projects.
