I’ve used Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Google > Account Information > Email Address > Edit Email Addresses to add some aliases for my gmail account.
My original account is [email protected], but I’ve added aliases [email protected], [email protected], etc.
In Gmail, you can add a “+” symbol and any word you want to the end of your email address, and it will still reach your inbox. For example, if your email address is [email protected], you can use [email protected], [email protected], or [email protected]. All of these email addresses will reach your inbox, but Gmail will treat them as separate email addresses.
This feature … allows you to organize your emails in a more efficient manner. … You can create separate [inboxes] for different purposes, such as newsletters, Eventbrite notifications, or work-related communications.
Another advantage … is that it makes it easier to track the source of spam emails. By creating a unique email address for each website or service you sign up for, you can easily identify which website is sending you spam by looking at the “from” field in the email.
However, when I choose to send mail using these addresses from Mail.app, the receiver only sees my original [email protected] address.
I am selecting them like this:
- File > New Message
- To: [email protected]
- Subject: Test
- From: [use the drop-down list to select] [email protected]
- Message > Send
But the email that [email protected] receives says it is from [email protected], not [email protected]
When I use the gmail.com website itself to send the mail,
- Settings > See All Settings > Accounts and Import > Send mail as: > Add another email address >
- Name: example
- Email address: [email protected]
- Leave the “Treat as alias” checkbox checked
- Next Step »
- Compose
- From: [use the dropdown to select] [email protected]
- To: [email protected]
- Subject: Test
- Send
Now, the email that [email protected] receives, has the correct “From” field, of [email protected].
And, if I send the same way from Apple Mail.app again, it will also have the correct “From” field.
I don’t really want to have to keep two lists of email aliases synchronised though, adding aliases to either one is already by itself an arduous processes.
Is there a way I can make it so that using Mail.app’s aliases in the From: field will just work?
