Updates added to the bottom of the article.

The PlayStation Network is suffering a global outage, with subscribers confirming that they can no longer play online games or access the company’s website.

When attempting to access PSN, users may be greeted with errors stating, “The connection to the server timed out” or “An error has occurred.”

The PlayStation Network status page has confirmed the outage, stating it impacts all services, including account management, gaming and social, PlayStation Video, PlayStation Store, and PlayStation Direct.

“You might have difficulty launching games, apps, or network features. We’re working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience,” reads the status message for the Gaming and social service.

The status page says that the outage started at approximately 8:41 PM ET and that they are working to restore service.

Earlier today, Sony fixed a bug that caused ads, game promotions, and trailers to appear where custom game art is normally shown when selecting a game.

It is not believed that this outage is related to this earlier issue.

Update 9/30/24: Sony has updated the PlayStation network status page to say that the PlayStation Direct issues have been resolved.

However, all other PlayStation Network services remain down with backend servers still returning “HTTP 500 Internal Server Error” messages. This type of error is commonly shown when a server is overloaded.

This is a developing story.
