iOS 18 will add a button to pause video recordings in your iPhone’s Camera app. Apple introduced the pause option in the Camera app with the iOS 18 Release Candidate build.

While basic, the pause option will ensure you don’t have to record multiple clips.

Pause a video recording in your iPhone’s Camera app

For reasons best known to Apple, the iPhone’s Camera app lacked a pause option while recording videos. You could take a picture while shooting a video but could not pause an ongoing recording. Thankfully, iOS 18 will change this by introducing a pause button.

Interestingly, the OS’s beta releases did not include this feature. However, it is present in the iOS 18 Release Candidate build that Apple seeded right after the “It’s Glowtime” event on September 9. Tapping the pause button will show a “PAUSED” indicator in red right below the video’s recorded length. A nice touch is that Apple will allow you to switch between lenses with a paused video.

Note that you cannot exit the Camera app after pausing a video. Doing so will stop the recording.

You can’t use Camera Control on the iPhone 16 to pause an ongoing video recording. You can use it to start or stop a video recording, change the zoom level, etc. But as Apple showcased on the stage, pausing a recording is. not possible. So, a pause button in the Camera viewfinder is a handy option.

iOS 18 drops next week

Alongside iPhone 16 Pro, AirPods 4, and Apple Watch Series 10, Apple also confirmed iOS 18’s release date. The OS will start rolling out to the public on September 16 (Monday). It packs several new features, including extensive Home Screen and Control Center customization options. The Photos app is also getting a big makeover for a better experience.

The main highlight is Apple Intelligence, though it will only arrive with iOS 18.1 in October.

iPadOS 18, watchOS 11 and macOS Sequoia also roll out on the same day.
