Finding Home Away from Home | Study in Ireland

Homesickness is part of every study abroad journey, and Rhieya Rahul Student Ambassador shares their heartfelt experience of adapting to life in Ireland. From embracing new cultures to finding joy in little moments, discover how they made Ireland their second home.

Finding Home Away from Home

Moving to Ireland from Dubai to pursue my medical studies at RCSI was a monumental leap for me. As someone who had never lived away from family or the comforts of home, this transition brought a mix of excitement and an inevitable pang of homesickness. However, this experience has been transformative, and I want to share how I’ve navigated it, thanks to the incredible support I’ve found here.

Adjusting to a New Life

The idea of leaving behind my family, familiar food, and Dubai’s perpetual warmth was daunting. I still remember the first night in my student accommodation, overwhelmed by the silence and the cool Irish breeze seeping through the window. Yet, the warmth of the Irish people quickly filled the void. From casual greetings on the street to the genuine kindness of strangers, I felt welcomed in ways I never imagined.

The climate was a stark contrast to what I was used to. The drizzle, the overcast skies, and the crisp air initially felt foreign, but over time, I fell in love with the cosy charm of Irish weather. It was as though Ireland was gently easing me into this new chapter of my life.

A Supportive RCSI Family

RCSI has been a cornerstone in helping me adapt. Their support for international students goes beyond academics. From orientation programmes to dedicated advisers, I felt understood and cared for. I was fortunate to have flatmates who soon became my family. Knowing I could knock on their doors at any time for a chat or support made my new environment feel less lonely.

Food and Culture: Bridging the Gap

Adjusting to Irish cuisine took some time, but it also became an opportunity to explore. I discovered local delights like Irish stew and soda bread, yet nothing compares to the joy of sharing a homemade biryani or samosas during a cultural night with friends.

PIBS (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka Society) has been a lifeline. Celebrating festivals like Diwali with fellow students created a “home away from home” feeling. Dressing up, dancing, and enjoying traditional food reminded me of the vibrant celebrations back in Dubai.

Finding Joy in Little Things

Living on my own has taught me resilience and independence. Simple acts like cooking a meal or figuring out public transport became accomplishments. I also learned to lean on my peers, sharing laughter and struggles, which has deepened our friendships.

Ireland’s beauty, from the serene green landscapes to the lively streets of Dublin, has become a source of solace. Weekend trips exploring cliffs, castles, and coastlines offered a perfect escape from the demands of medical school and helped me appreciate the uniqueness of my surroundings.

A Journey of Growth

Looking back, homesickness was not just a challenge but a catalyst for growth. It pushed me to embrace new experiences, forge meaningful connections, and cherish the little things that make life beautiful. Ireland, with its warm people and enriching experiences, has truly become my second home.

For anyone considering studying abroad, know that homesickness is a shared experience. Embrace it, seek support, and allow yourself to grow through the process. Ireland will welcome you with open arms, just as it did for me.
