The Apple TV+ team-up between George Clooney and Brad Pitt hit number one on a ratings company’s popularity chart the first week the film is available to stream.
It’s not surprising: the two superstars could probably take the leads in Uncle Wiggly and the Runaway Cheese and it would be a hit.
Wolfs pulls in a big pack … err, audience
Star power attracts attention to movies. Apple knows that well. It released Ghosted with Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, and also Argylle starring Henry Cavill, John Cena, Samuel L. Jackson, and more. Following that strategy, its latest action offering puts a couple of guys you’ve probably heard of in the lead roles. And it’s working.
The analysts at Reelgood put Wolfs at No. 1 on its listing of Top 10 movies on all streaming platforms from September 26 through October 2. Rival ratings service JustWatch puts the film at the No. 2 slot last week. The film just started streaming on September 27, so it got popular immediately.
Estimates from companies JustWatch and Reelgood are necessary because streaming services rarely reveal how many people tune in to their offerings. And it’s always good to have an outside perspective.
Sources (almost certainly at Apple itself) leaked to Deadline that the film boosted viewership by nearly 30% week-over-week on the service.
It’s a somewhat dark comedy-thriller
Apple TV+ describes its latest big-budget film by saying:
“Global superstars George Clooney and Brad Pitt team up for the action-comedy Wolfs. Clooney plays a professional fixer hired to cover up a high-profile crime. But when a second fixer (Pitt) shows up, and the two “lone wolves” are forced to work together, they find their night spiraling out of control in ways that neither one of them expected. Wolfs also stars Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, Poorna Jagannathan, Richard Kind and Zlatko Burić.”
The Cult of Mac review calls it an “engrossing popcorn movie.” Other critics aren’t always so kind. It scored 68% on the review-aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.
Wolfs is now streaming on Apple TV+
Why read about the film? After a limited release in theaters, Wolfs is available to stream now.
Watching it and recent hit series Slow Horses and Bad Monkey plus many other series and films comes with a subscription to Apple TV+. The service is $9.99 per month with a seven-day free trial. You can also get it via any tier of the Apple One subscription bundle.
And Apple’s streaming video service also includes much more, of course. There’s a library of drama, comedies, musicals, children’s shows, nature documentaries, etc.
