To celebrate the U.S. National Park Service hitting its 108th birthday, Apple will donate $10 for purchases made in its retail stores or online store this week to the National Park Foundation.

This has become an annual tradition for the iPhone-maker.

Apple purchases donate to national parks through August 25

Congress created Yellowstone National Park in 1872, and authorized more national parks and monuments in the following decades. The National Park Service launched on August 25, 1916 with a mandate to manage the 35 parks then in existence. It was charged to “conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wild life therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations.” Today, it manages over 85 million acres.

The National Park Foundation funds programs across the United States to protect and improve the parks for present and future generations. Congress created it in 1967.

In a tradition going back eight years, Apple helps the foundation with contributions each August. Today through August 25, Apple promises to make a $10 donation to the National Park Foundation for every purchase made with Apple Pay on apple.com, in the Apple Store app, or at an Apple Store in the U.S.

“Every time I visit a national park, I’m struck by their extraordinary beauty and incredibly rich history,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re proud to partner with the National Park Foundation to help preserve these natural treasures that inspire so many people. Their important work helps ensure that future generations will be able to experience that same sense of awe, wonder, and reverence for the planet we call home.”

For example, Apple’s support helps fund the EcoLogik Institute. This brings kids ages 10 to 16 into Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego where through apprenticeships and other work experiences they gain on-the-ground experience in natural resources science careers.
